Looking for an easy weeknight dinner that comes together quickly? It takes only 30 minutes to make Cabbage and Noodles with Smoked Sausage, a hearty, comforting meal for the whole family. You’ll be surprised at just how quickly it disappears.

Cabbage is such a versatile vegetable to use in recipes during the fall and winter months. It’s affordable and abundant in most grocery stores. Whether you shred it to use in Creamy Coleslaw or use it as the side dish in Pork Chops and Cabbage with Bacon, it is hearty and flavorful. Today, I made one of our favorite fall meals, Cabbage and Noodles with Smoked Sausage.
The classic combination of cooked cabbage, onions and noodles, also known as Haluski, is a European comfort food that Americans have come to love and rely on as a quick and easy meal.
Sauté the cabbage in butter with onions, salt and black pepper. Stir in cooked egg noodles towards the end of cooking to make a hearty, delicious dish. Add smoked sausage to make it even more substantial and flavorful.

You will need only 5 ingredients to make Cabbage and Noodles with Smoked Sausage. The best dishes are usually the simplest with only a handful of ingredients. It really is a no-frills, easy meal that tastes delicious!
Cabbage and Noodles with Smoked Sausage Recipe
What’s needed:
- TURKEY SMOKED SAUSAGE– Use a 13 ounce package of turkey smoked sausage to add flavor and protein to the dish. Cut the sausage into thick slices and brown it in the pan.
- ONIONS AND CARROTS– Sauté the onions and carrots in a pan with butter before adding the cabbage. Carrots lend sweetness to the cabbage and make a great combination with the cabbage and noodles.
- GREEN CABBAGE– Be sure to wash the cabbage and remove the core before chopping it into 1-inch chunks. You will need about 4 cups of chopped cabbage, as it will cook down as you simmer it.
- EGG NOODLES– Combine the cooked egg noodles with the buttery cabbage, onions and carrots to fortify the dish. Smoked Sausage is added back to the pan and combined with the rest of the ingredients.
Who would have thought that these basic ingredients would make such a comforting family meal?
Variations to Cabbage and Noodles
This recipe is so flexible, allowing you to use the ingredients you like best or already have on hand.
MEAT– Use any smoked sausage in this recipe, as it simply depends on your preference. Both pork and beef smoked sausage have fewer calories than turkey smoked sausage and are equally flavorful.
VEGETABLES– Additional vegetables, like frozen peas or leeks, can be added to make the dish even more hearty. Pick ones that are seasonal and affordable at the grocery store.
SPICE– This recipe is seasoned simply with salt and ground black pepper. Add smoked paprika or cumin to the cabbage to give the dish a warm, comforting flavor.

What equipment is needed?
Cabbage and Noodles with Smoked Sausage can be made in a large skillet or a braising pan on the stovetop. My favorite pan for simmering meals low and slow is the Le Creuset Signature Braiser with Glass Lid. I purchased it online at Sur la table and it works great for so many meals.
I also like this braiser because it is versatile and can be used for baking some of my favorite side dishes, including Skillet Cornbread and Squash Casserole. Any recipe you might make in a cast iron skillet, you can make in this braising pan.
The braising pan is shallow with a non-stick finish, giving you the convenience of modern cookware. It is easy to clean, comes in a variety of colors, and at 2 1/4 quarts it is just the right size for making recipes intended for 2 to 6 people.

Try stirring in a teaspoon of Dijon mustard to the cabbage before adding in the noodles. It really adds a punch of flavor! Yum!
